A two-day Orientation Programme was held on 16-17 September 2024 in order to introduce our university and our school to the new students enrolled in English, Spanish and Arabic classes at Istanbul Medeniyet University School of Foreign Languages for the 2024-2025 Academic Year.
On the first day of the programme held at IMU Tuzla-Orhanlı Campus, after the opening made by Inst. Tülin TÜRNÜK, a minute of silence was held by our instructors, officers and students for our sainted elders who were martyred in the War of Independence and our ancestor, the great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades-in-arms, and then our National Anthem was recited.
After the opening speech of the School of Foreign Languages Director Asst. Prof. Dr. Ferdane DENKCİ AKKAŞ, Inst. Dr. Sezgin BALLIDAĞ, the Vice Director of the School of Foreign Languages, briefed the students about the program carried out in the School of Foreign Languages. Afterwards, student panels were organised with the participation of students who attended preparatory classes in the last academic year. They shared their experiences with the newly enrolled students. At the end of the first day of the orientation programme, students who will study English, Spanish and Arabic in preparatory classes attended separate sessions to get information about the curriculum of the preparatory programmes to be implemented, the books used and the assignments given by English Programme Curriculum and Material Development Office Coordinator, Inst. Ayşegül YILDIZ, Spanish Programme Coordinator Inst. Yasemin TAŞDEMİR and Arabic Programme Coordinator Inst. Emre YAZICI.
After the opening of the second day of the orientation programme, our guest speaker Asst. Prof. Dr. Tuba ARABACI ATLAMAZ, from Boğaziçi University Foreign Language Education Department, gave a speech titled “The Door to the World: Learning a Foreign Language”. She continued her speech about the importance of motivation in language learning by explaining the types of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. She also talked about the importance of knowing oneself in the language learning process, gave information about SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and finished her speech by recommending some resources to support the students’ studies.
The final event of the Orientation Program included the guest lecturers from the different faculties of Istanbul Medeniyet University. The list of guest lecturers is as follows:
