IMU Modern Dance Community Organized a Dance Camp

11.02.2022

A two-day dance camp was organized by IMU Modern Dance Community on February 10-11, 2022. This event took place at Istanbul Medeniyet University North Campus K Block, in the Hekim Berke foyer area and on the 3rd floor classrooms. Four successful dance instructors in their field were involved in this activity.

On the first day of the dance camp, after the necessary arrangements for dance were made by the board of directors (setting up changing rooms, arranging dance areas, etc.), participants, instructors, and assistants were brought to the event area. The first class, held from 18:00 to 19:30, was taught by Sertan Tutar, who works as an instructor at the DanceFabrika Dance School affiliated with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in the open style genre. Open Style dance is a dynamic dance style where participants can express themselves by combining various dance styles. The second class, held from 20:00 to 21:30, was taught by Ege Konakoğlu, a student at our university and one of the founders of the community. Ege Konakoğlu conducted the class in the hip hop genre. Similar to the open style genre, this dance style brings together the dancer's free dance styles to create an artistic piece, and it is an energetic dance style. The contents of this productive and enjoyable first class (photos and videos) were later shared on the community's Instagram account, marking the completion of the first day.

On the second day of the dance camp, after the arrangements, the first class, held from 18:00 to 19:30, was taught by Kaya Godfrey, another instructor from the DanceFabrika Dance School, in the afro genre. Afro dance is a lively dance style rooted in Africa. Then, the second class was taught by dance instructor Hürrem Miri in the high heels style. High heel dance is a dance that has rapidly gained popularity and is performed by women wearing high-heeled shoes and executing aesthetic figures. The performance of this dance in high heels represents women's resilience against discrimination and challenges. At the end of this fun and successful second day, all the contents were shared on social media platforms, just like on the first day of the camp.

The main objective of this dance camp was to provide all participants with an opportunity to have fun, socialize, and learn new things in a university environment. It aimed to enable young people to introduce themselves to new knowledge, skills, and cultures in a quality and safe university environment. By facilitating access to such learning opportunities, students were given the chance to express themselves.

The dance camp was successfully completed after the two days, achieving its goals. We would like to thank the entire board of directors, instructors, assistants, and participants for their contributions.
